"Produce 48" is an ongoing survival reality television show on Mnet. It is a large-scale project in which the public “produces” a girl group by voting for members out of a pool of 96 trainees from Japan and South Korea, as well as voting for the group’s concept, debut single, and group name. It is a collaboration between the Mnet series Produce 101 and the J-pop idol group AKB48. The winning 12 contestants, with no nationality caps, as voted only by Korean viewers, will promote as a group for two and a half years. Produced by AKATV (the company that also produced the second season of Produce 101) for Mnet, the show premiered on June 15, 2018, and will air every Friday at 23:00 (KST) for 12 episodes. It is directed by Ahn Joon-young, who also directed the first two seasons of Produce 101.
"Produce 48" brings together 96 trainees, of which 39 girls are from Japanese idol group AKB48 and 57 girls are from different entertainment companies in South Korea, to form a Korean-Japanese group that will promote for two and a half years. They will adopt the AKB48’s concept of “idols you can meet and greet” and be able to perform in their own theatre. Members of the group will be able to promote under their own agencies concurrently. Although JYP don't send their representatives, but Lee CHae Yeon participates in this program, Lee CHae Yeon was in "Sixteen" (a show created by JYP) and also in "K-Pop Star". Although YG Entertainment don't send their representatives, YG former trainees (Park Seo Young and Park Jinny) participate in this program.
